Sent crypto to the wrong address? Identify who controls it

Do not send another transfer. Confirm the transaction hash, exact destination, network and status. Recovery generally depends on whoever controls the destination keys or receiving service.

DIAGNOSIS FIRST

Identify what actually happened

A valid blockchain transaction is not automatically reversible because the sender made an address mistake. If the destination belongs to a known custodial service, that operator can assess recovery. If no one accessible controls the keys, recovery may be impossible.

SAFE NEXT ACTIONS

Work through the evidence in order

  1. 01Verify the destination and transaction status on the correct explorer.
  2. 02Determine whether the address belongs to your wallet, another person or a custodial service.
  3. 03If it is your compatible wallet, inspect the correct network and token display.
  4. 04If it belongs to a service, use that service’s official recovery channel.
  5. 05Preserve the hash and evidence without exposing wallet secrets.

KEEP THIS EVIDENCE

  • Transaction hash and actual network
  • Destination address
  • Asset or token contract and amount
  • Evidence linking the destination to a known service when applicable

STOP BEFORE YOU DO THIS

  • Do not trust guaranteed-recovery direct messages.
  • Do not disclose a seed phrase to prove ownership.
  • Do not confuse a wrong address with a wrong network.

SITUATION-SPECIFIC FAQ

Answers before you escalate

Open a ticket
Can Swapario reverse a confirmed transaction?

A blockchain transaction cannot normally be edited or reversed by the exchange interface after confirmation.

What if the wrong address is another account in my wallet?

If you control the keys and the asset exists on a compatible network, the wallet can potentially access it after selecting the correct account or token.

Is a checksum enough to prove the receiver is correct?

No. A checksum can catch some typing errors but cannot prove ownership, intent or network support.
