Sent crypto on the wrong network? Stop before sending again

SHORT ANSWER

If crypto was sent on the wrong network, do not send a second transaction. Record the transaction hash, source network, destination network, asset, address and order ID. Check whether the destination controls compatible keys, then contact the receiving service or exchange support. Recovery depends on network and key access and is never guaranteed.

Identify what was actually sent on-chain

Open the source wallet transaction and record the blockchain explorer link. The ticker displayed by a wallet is insufficient; identify the token contract or native asset and the network that confirmed the transfer.

Determine who controls the destination keys

If you control the same wallet key on a compatible EVM network, a wallet configuration may reveal the asset. If the address belongs to an exchange or service, only that operator can evaluate recovery.

Contact the correct party with complete evidence

Provide the order ID, transaction hash, network, asset, amount and destination address. Never provide a seed phrase or private key. Do not follow unsolicited recovery messages.

CONCRETE EXAMPLE

Example: USDT arrives on BNB Smart Chain instead of Ethereum

A sender intends to deposit USDT ERC-20 but withdraws USDT BEP-20 from a wallet to the same-looking 0x address. The transaction succeeds on BNB Smart Chain, yet the receiving service watches only Ethereum for that order. The useful evidence is the BNB Smart Chain transaction hash, token contract, destination address, amount and order ID. If the receiver controls the matching private key and supports recovery on that chain, it may investigate. The shared 0x format alone neither completes the order nor guarantees recovery.
