USDT networks explained: ERC-20 vs TRC-20 vs BEP-20

SHORT ANSWER

ERC-20, TRC-20 and BEP-20 USDT share the USDT ticker but use different blockchains. ERC-20 uses Ethereum and ETH for gas, TRC-20 uses TRON and can require TRX, while BEP-20 uses BNB Smart Chain and BNB. Choose the network supported by both wallets or use an explicit network-conversion route.

Compare the network, address and gas asset together

ERC-20 and BEP-20 can both display 0x addresses, which makes visual inspection alone unsafe. TRC-20 commonly uses an address beginning with T. The wallet network selector is as important as the address.

Use a conversion route to change USDT networks

Changing networks requires an exchange or supported bridge. A TRC-20 deposit and ERC-20 payout must be named independently; copying an Ethereum address into a TRON send screen is not a network conversion.

Example: moving 250 USDT from TRON to Ethereum

A source wallet showing USDT TRC-20 holds the token on TRON and normally uses an address beginning with T. A destination that accepts USDT ERC-20 expects the token on Ethereum at a 0x address. The user selects a TRC-20 deposit and an ERC-20 payout instead of copying the ticker alone. TRX may be needed to send from the source wallet. Receiving ERC-20 USDT does not itself require ETH, but the destination wallet will need ETH later if it sends that token onward.
