Base network guide for ETH and token exchanges
Base is an Ethereum layer-2 network that uses ETH for gas and EVM-style 0x addresses. A Base balance does not automatically appear on Ethereum mainnet.

Network identity
Base executes transactions on its own layer-2 chain and ultimately posts data to Ethereum. Wallets can use familiar EVM accounts, but deposits, token contracts and block explorers are Base-specific.
Address rules
Base uses 0x addresses. The same private key can derive the same address on Ethereum, yet a service must monitor Base to detect a Base deposit. Always read the chain label beside the asset.
Fee mechanism
Transactions pay gas in ETH on Base. Fees include layer-2 execution and costs related to posting data to Ethereum. A Base token sender needs ETH on Base, not only ETH on mainnet.
Settlement
Layer-2 transactions can confirm quickly, while provider acceptance and cross-layer finality policies vary. A bridge withdrawal timeline is a different process from an exchange payout.
Memo or tag
Normal Base transfers use the EVM address and token contract without a destination tag. Custodial receiver instructions still take precedence.
Tokens and representations
A token on Base has a Base contract identity. It can differ from the Ethereum-mainnet version or a bridged representation. Match the provider asset to the receiver’s supported deposit.

What usually goes wrong
Users select Ethereum because the wallet displays the same 0x address. The funds then arrive on the wrong chain for the order even though the destination string is identical.

Follow both legs of the route
If a wallet holds ETH on Base but the exchange order expects Ethereum mainnet, it must not send directly. Select an explicit Base deposit route or move the asset using a supported cross-network method first.

Does Base use ETH for gas?
Yes. The ETH must be available on Base for a Base transaction.
Is a Base 0x address an Ethereum deposit?
No. Address appearance does not merge the networks; the receiving service must support Base.
Is exchanging from Base the same as using the official bridge?
No. A bridge transfers representations between networks, while an exchange converts through a provider route and pays the selected destination asset.
